In the 18th century the Hessian, a low heel-semi pointed toe boot, was standard issue footwear for the military. Early 19th century Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, had his shoemaker modify the Hessian and the Wellington boot was born. Then in 1853 Hiram Hutchinson began manufacturing shoes with a new vulcanization process for natural rubber and the Wellington type rubber boot was an immediate success. For the first time you could come home with mud free, dry feet.
Today, the Wellington is known as a rain boot, wellie, topboot, gumboot, and galoshes. These waterproof boots protect our feet from the rain and melting snow. You can find rain boots with fleece lining to keep your feet warm as well as dry. Rubber boots are no longer available in just solid colors and one style. You can find rain boots in the style of western boots or rain boots with a wedge heel. The colors are endless with all types of patterns, prints and designs.
