The word slipper is recorded in English as far back as 1478, slipper is derived from the word slip, and therefore slippers are shoes that are slipped on.
Slippers can be made from a variety of materials such as terrycloth, leather, plastic, rubber, velvet, or wool. There are many styles such as thong sandal, mule with no heel, shoes with a heel but you just slip your foot in and go, and there are even slippers that look like stuffed animals. Designs can be simple solid colors to animal prints or fun designs and patterns. There is a slipper available for every member of the family from the children’s slipper, men’s slippers, and women’s slipper.
Dancers and gymnasts use Acrobatic slippers and ballerinas use ballet slippers but both types of slippers have been used for street wear also. In the late 19th century bathing slippers were popular for swimming and beach wear. The boudoir slipper or the Harlow slipper was a sexy slipper popular in the early 20th century and was made of fancy fabrics and sometimes trimmed with feathers or fur. Women’s evening slippers included pump or sandal style made in luxurious fabrics or metallic leather. The Pullman slipper was lightweight, made with glove leather, and could be folded into a small envelope to be used for travelling.
Japanese are well known for not wearing shoes in their homes so they had house slippers that were slipped on at the threshold before entering their home. They also have toilet slippers which are for, well you know and special slippers for foreign guests to slip on over their shoes. The British named their traditional slipper of the Victorian era the Albert slipper, named after Prince Albert, a velvet slipper with leather sole and silk lining used to wear around the house and occasionally in informal settings. Sometimes the term slipper is interchangeable with flip flops or sandals, this is more common in the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Hawaii. If you are in Scotland and someone yells for their baffies, they are referring to their slippers. The most famous slipper is probably the glass slipper worn by Cinderella to the bride finding ball for Prince Charming.
